2018 State STANYS Conference

The first weekend of November 2018 saw science teachers from across NY State descent on Rochester, NY for our annual conference.  It is a time to reflect on teaching, share what we have been doing in our classrooms, and learn from others in our field.  The Western Section of STANYS is always very involved in our state level conference.   This year we had several people working behind the scenes to help the magic of the conference come together.  Lowell Sylwester served as Registration Chair making sure everyone was properly sign up for the event!   Sandra George, who serves as Association Treasurer, added to her duties by taking care of VIP Arrangements, welcoming our VIPs to the conference in style.   Also from the Western Section, Kenneth Huff, served his role as President Elect getting ready to take the lead of our organization.

Our SARs also got involved by presenting at the conference this year.  Sharing instructional strategies, working to deepen understanding of content, and sharing new technology were just a few of the presentations offered by our following Subject Area Representatives: Cheryl Aldrich, Susan Cyrulik, Sarah English, Mary Kay Flett, Sandra George, David Henry, Kenneth Huff,  Jeff Salerno, and Katie Sugg.

Western Section also celebrated winning the Section T-Shirt Award with our "Total Eclipse of the Heart" design.  We will have these shirt for sale at our Mini-Conference in March.   Finally, Western Section also had Cheryl Aldrich receive the Anton Banko Award for Excellence in Teaching K-6 Science.

It was a wonderful State level conference with many opportunities for learning!  We hope to continue this learning at our Mini-Conference in March 2019!
